Different Types of Reclining Chairs
by Terry Canup

Recliners come in many different types. This article will detail them and help you select what is best for you.

Recliners are known as "motion products" by the manufacturers. There is a mechanism which determines how that particular recliner will function. There are three basic types of manual recliners. Those with an outside handle that controls the reclining mechanism are the most common. Next is the "push-back" method. You use your muscles to move the chair into a relining position while seated. Next is the pull cord release. This release can be placed either on the inside or outside of the arm. All are effective methods. Once you determine which type of mech you want, the next determination is whether it will continue to offer movement once reclined. Reclining gliders will perform this function.

Unlike a reclining rocker, a glider will still move in the recline position. A rocker recliner ceases to rock once the chair is put into recline position. These are properties of the mechanism. A fixed recliner is stationary whether reclined or used as a normal chair. High leg recliners are a good example of this kind of recliner. In general, High leg recliners have no motion except for their reclining function.

The most popular recliners are rocker recliners. These recliners tilt forward and back (or rock) when not reclined. The bases stay fixed. Gliders, on the other hand, move the entire base forward and back in a linear motion. Gliders are more popular in non reclining chairs.

Recently, power recliners have started hitting the market at reasonable prices. These use similar mechanisms as manual chairs, but utilize a motor to perform the reclining and un-reclining motion. These come in fixed and rocking designs. If their is arm weakness involved, these can be particularly useful.

Power recliner

Power lift recliners are another type of reclining chair. Similar to the power recliner, these chairs employ additional technology to raise, and lower the seat, to, and from, a normal standing height. This greatly benefits those with mobility issues. It also has the power recline feature.
