Different Types of
Recliners come in many
different types. This article will detail them and help
you select what is best for you.

Recliners are known as "motion products" by the
manufacturers. There is a mechanism which determines how
that particular recliner will function. There are three
basic types of manual recliners. Those with an outside
handle that controls the reclining mechanism are the most
common. Next is the "push-back" method. You use your muscles
to move the chair into a relining position while seated.
Next is the pull cord release. This release can be placed
either on the inside or outside of the arm. All are
effective methods. Once you determine which type of mech you
want, the next determination is whether it will continue to
offer movement once reclined. Reclining gliders will perform
Unlike a reclining rocker, a glider will still move in
the recline position. A rocker recliner ceases to rock once
the chair is put into recline position. These are properties
of the mechanism. A fixed recliner is stationary whether
reclined or used as a normal chair. High leg recliners are a
good example of this kind of recliner. In general, High leg
recliners have no motion except for their reclining
The most popular recliners are rocker recliners. These
recliners tilt forward and back (or rock) when not reclined.
The bases stay fixed. Gliders, on the other hand, move the
entire base forward and back in a linear motion. Gliders are
more popular in non reclining chairs.
Recently, power recliners have started hitting the market
at reasonable prices. These use similar mechanisms as manual
chairs, but utilize a motor to perform the reclining and
un-reclining motion. These come in fixed and rocking

Similar to the power recliner, these chairs employ
additional technology to raise, and lower the seat, to, and
from, a normal standing height. This greatly benefits those
with mobility issues. It also has the power recline feature.
